Reflections of Gor

FreeWomen and Their true position within Gor

There is a huge unrealistic off-key opinion that some have within Gorean Roleplay of Free Women. Things like Women can wield Axes and Fight just as Men.  While a Women may be born into the High Caste of Warriors. Such a birthright does not mean that She has the ability and power to be a Warrior. A Gorean Free Woman does not draw a weapon against another individual unless she is under attack. Beware! According to his codes, to draw a weapon against a member of the Warrior Caste is to place yourself within his capture rights. This includes drawing weapons and placing them on a table or displaying such objects in a threatening manner to others in the room, without suitable provocation.

"You have lifted a weapon against me," he said. "My codes permit me to kill you."  Outlaw of Gor, page 14.

"You have drawn a weapon against me," I said.
"You are of the warriors?" said the fellow. He wavered. He, too, knew the codes.  Magicians of Gor, page 129.

The women of a given caste, it should be noted, often do not engage in caste work. For example, a woman in the Metalworkers does not, commonly, work at the forge, nor is a woman of the Builders likely to be found supervising the construction of fortifications. Caste membership, for Goreans, is generally a simple matter of birth; it is not connected necessarily with the performance of certain skills, nor the attainment of a given level of proficiency in such skills.

Gor is a harsh world.  Its beauty is its primal nature.  It is a world of strength.  The Free Woman of Gor is no different.  Her strength is more subdued than that of the men.  It is often a softer strength.  They are no where near as physically powerful as a man and would never think to be.  Even the strongest of Panther Girls and Talunas respects the sheer physical strength of a Gorean man.  The strength of a woman comes from within her.  It is her intelligence, her cunning, and her wit.  These are her strengths and these are also her tools, her weapons if you will. There are cultural issues and limitations that the woman must be aware of.  How she thrives in those restrictions is entirely up to her.

...The strength of a full-grown woman is equivalent to that of a twelve-year-old boy. Goreans read in this an indication as to who is master. ...

It is a difficult and perilous undertaking for a Gorean Free Woman to maintain her status... in fact, a Gorean Free Woman is expected to choose the option of free and honorable death rather than accept the fate of living in slavery. In practice, however, this rarely occurs. Few women, even Gorean women of high caste and social position, will willingly choose to suffer a grisly death rather than brave the degradations of bondage.

A Free Woman will know to kneel as Free Women do and never to sit cross legged like a man. She will learn to eat and drink in small delicate bites and sips, sometimes while holding up a veil but only as high as it is necessary for her lips to find the food or drink. She will learn to take pride in being frigid and almost void of sexual awareness; whether this is actual fact or not, she will be careful to let it be how it appears. The Free Woman's role does not require her to be sexual or even sensual.

...frigidity is one of the titles and permissions implicated in the lofty status of a free woman. For many, it is in effect their proudest possession. It distinguishes them from the lowly slave girl. It proves to themselves and others that they are free. ...
---Beasts of Gor, page 243

...The Gorean girl is, even if free, accustomed to slavery; she will perhaps own one or more slaves herself; she knows that she is weaker than men and what this can mean; she knows that cities fall and caravans are plundered; she knows she might even, by a sufficiently bold warrior, be captured in her own quarters and, bound and hooded, be carried by tarnback over the walls of her own city. Moreover, even if she is never enslaved, she is familiar with the duties of slaves and what is expected of them; if she should be enslaved she will know, on the whole, what is expected of her, what is permitted her and what is not; moreover the Gorean girl is literally educated, fortunately or not, to the notion that it is of great importance to know how to please men; accordingly, even girls who will be free companions, and never slaves, learn the preparation and serving of exotic dishes, the arts of walking, and standing, and being beautiful, the care of a man's equipment, the love dances of their city, and so on. ...
--Nomads of Gor, page 63

There are many more things that could be added, to prove how silly some are in Their Roleplay of Free Women. But the basic is that Women were not equal to Men and Gor is a Mans World.  Women need know Their place be they Free or slave. The Disney part of what people portend to be Gor is not from the Values or Philosphies that Gor was meant to be.

Notes to Free Women

Free Women will be recognized provided they wear the traditional robes of concealment and are properly veiled. To not wear them you do so at your own risk. with the Exception of Torvaldsland Free Women.

While free, they will remain respectful of males At All Times.

Free Women may carry weapons, but they may only be used in defense of their Home stone, their house, themselves or the honor and protection of the three.

In public, Free Women will travel with a suitable retinue of armed guards. They understand the dangers of trying to travel alone. Free Women may carry daggers or poisoned needles to protect themselves. But, a woman must rely on surprise to have a chance against a man. Most men could easily disarm a woman with a dagger. To a Warrior, a Free Woman drawing steel within his presence, without due cause, is enough to place that woman within his collaring rights.

Free Woman may spar, but only in private.

Free Women are treated with respect and honor. Considerable deference is due to a Free Woman. They enjoy a prestige and higher status due to their station and/or Caste.

Free Women may speak freely and without permission. They command attention when they speak, as it is their due. They may be bold and do much of what they wish. However, their words should be tempered with the respect due to men at all times.

"The demeaning of men, whereas it is permitted to, and not unknown among, free women, is not permitted to female slaves. Such, on their part, can be a capital offense."
        (Magician of Gor)

Suitable punishments and disciplines may also be arranged for a Free Woman suitable to her status and dignity. Such discipline is only  done by a Free Companion or male relative. If the Free Woman has no family or companion, the task of punishment falls to the head of her house.

"Did you strike me because I challenged your manhood? she asked. You were not struck for such an absurd reason, I said. You are, after all, a free women, and free women are entitled to insult, and to attempt to demean and destroy men. It is one of their freedoms, unless men, of course, should decide to take it from them. You were struck, rather, because you were attempting to manipulate me."  (Mercenaries of Gor)

Men normally do not collar women of their own Home Stone unless those Free Women fail to act in a manner befitting their station.

"She had been free. She was safe from enslavement in her own city."
        (Hunters of Gor)

        Reminder to FW

"You are, after all, a free women, and free women are entitled to insult, and to attempt to demean and destroy men. It is one of their freedoms, unless men, of course, should decide to take it from them."

As clearly stated, the priviledge of 'insult and demeaning' can be Taken Away at the whim of men. This considered, think carefully of your words and actions, knowing they CAN result in punishment. While generally protected from collaring by men of our own Home Stone, we are Not above whipping. When 'enjoying' this priviledge granted to us, we must always know when enough is enough. The men of Gor are fierce Warriors and deserving of our respect.
